A Brief Artist History

Home

I was born in the summer of 1957 in Riverside California. I was named Thomas Jesse Herring after my father and mother. It made it easier for me to figure out who these adults were.

My first endeavor into an artistic career was about the age of three or four and it was a drawing of midnight aka., scribbling on a piece of paper using a black crayola. That was my first taste of the artworld and I loved it!
I continued to learn and practice using pencil and color pencil, drawing my favorite cartoon characters, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and all of the other Hanna Babara cartoons. I also drew Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and comicbook superheroes like Superman, Batman and the Flash.

Over the years, I took different art classes in grade school and high school but I am mostly self taught. The more art that I saw everywhere that I went, the more that I wanted to learn. I continued to study styles and different types of art. It is something that is never ending.

One day I was at a store and saw the Wings Over America Album with Paul McCartney and his band on it. I thought that it was a photo but on closer inspection I saw that it was airbrushed. I was hooked. I grabbed every magazine and talked to different artist who would give me information on this medium.

I finally bought an airbrush by Badger and worked with it everyday trying to control it. Later, I bought an Iwata airbrush which sprays more thin fine lines and gave my greater control. Now in the computer age, I have found that more artists are using it and as the technology becomes more better, I see more detailed and highly polished art being done.

By no means do I see it as replacing the old style of art by any means, but it has become a compliment to it. It is now starting to pay off for me as I have had my artwork published in:

  • Airbrush Magazine in 1995
    Airbrush95
  • Airbrush Action + Art Magazine in 1998
    AirbrushAction98
  • Airbrush Action Art Magazine in 2005
    AirbrushAction06
  • Art Scene International Magazine August 2008
    Art_Scene_International_2008
  • Art Scene International Magazine June 2009
    Art_Scene_International_2009

I was also in Lowrider Art Magazine in 2003 and 2004.
I have always had a love of science fiction and so I am showing some of what I have done.
I have also done artwork for the Oregon Zoo by painting wildlife animals on tee shirts and jackets.
I am now selling greeting cards and postcards.
